Success in the 3-D bioprinting of cartilage

A team of researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy has managed to generate cartilage tissue by printing stem cells using a 3D-bioprinter. The fact that the stem cells survived being printed in this manner is a success in itself. In addition, the research team was able to influence the cells to multiply and differentiate to form chondrocytes (cartilage cells) in the printed structure.

Johnson & Johnson partner with Bioprinters to create 3D printed knee

Having announced partnerships with Carbon and HP last year, pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson (J&J) have now outlined plans to integrate 3D printing into the development of medical devices. 3-D-printed structures ‚remember‘ their shapes

Engineers from MIT and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) are using light to print three-dimensional structures that „remember“ their original shapes. Even after being stretched, twisted, and bent at extreme angles, the structures — from small coils and multimaterial flowers, to an inch-tall replica of the Eiffel tower — sprang back to their original forms within seconds of being heated to a certain temperature „sweet spot.“
